Get ready to revisit a whole new world. Disney has green lit a prequel to Aladdin, this time in live action and centered around the original movie’s breakout character, the Genie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will follow our favorite blue-skinned wish granter before imprisonment:
The new project would focus on the realm of the Genies and reveal how Aladdin’s Genie ended up enslaved in the lamp.
Although Genies is only in the early stages of development, the long-term plan is to have the project lead into an Aladdin live-action movie.
In case you can’t recall, the 1992 cartoon classic (was it really that long ago?) began with Aladdin freeing Genie and him granting the lovable street urchin three wishes. Impersonating princes, getting thrown into the ocean by an evil mastermind and magic carpet sing-alongs ensue on the way to a standard Disney “happily ever after.”
It’ll be interesting to see how this prequel sets Aladdin up, or stomps all over your childhood — however you want to look at it. It’s already a shame, though, that Robin Williams is no longer around to reprise his beloved, iconic role.
