Last week, Reese Witherspoon was confirmed as a cast mate to Matt Damon in the Alexander Payne project Downsizing, about people voluntarily shrinking themselves for the good of the Earth.
Now Alec Baldwin, Neil Patrick Harris and Jason Sudeikis have all been added to the cast in unconfirmed roles. There’s also no word on whether anyone has taken seriously yet my suggestion to replace Matt Damon with Luke Wilson, but I think it’s a good idea. I mean, I haven’t read the script and know very little about the project in its current form, but in Legally Blonde, Elle Woods really loved those little dogs, enough that it was the entire plot in Legally Blonde 2, so I don’t see why she wouldn’t be on board with shrinking herself for like, America.
The previous Downsizing project had Sacha Baron Cohen and Meryl Streep attached to it, and God I hope somehow Alec Baldwin is going to be doing the Meryl role instead. The movie’s gone through casting changes already, with Paul Giamatti being replaced by Damon, but the original gist of the film was that Matt Damon’s character was looking to change his life for the better, and joins a movement to literally shrink people to 1/8th their size. They live in towns designed for the “smalls.” The thought is that they consume less and therefore are conserving resources. The problem is, even tiny Americans are still sort of fat and lazy and stupid.
God, I hope there are tiny Costcos.
