In addition to having access to all of their original TV shows, HBO NOW also has a robust line-up of films. So, while you’re in between episodes of Ballers and True Detective, you can check out some excellent films like The Drop, Lone Survivor, and more. Like Netflix, HBO NOW updates their offerings each month, so here are some highlights of what you can expect to see from the standalone service come this July.
Dawn of the Dead (7/1)
The original Dawn of the Dead — in my humble opinion — is George Romero’s masterwork, a stunning combination of horror and social commentary. Zack Snyder’s remake may have lost some of the allegorical magic that the original had, but it’s about as good as a remake of a masterpiece that we could have asked for. Also, the title sequence is pretty badass.
7 Days in Hell (7/8)
In the vein of Christopher Guest films comes this faux-documentary about two tennis players (Kit Harington and Andy Samberg) who engage in the longest match in the sport’s history. With commentary from actual tennis legends and pros, plus appearances from Howie Mandel, Will Forte, and more, this might be one of the funniest TV offerings this summer.
The Drop (7/25)
This film, starring James Gandolfini (in one of his final performances) and a stellar Tom Hardy, was in my top 10 films of 2014. Hardy plays a quiet bartender who has the unenviable task of paying back some murderous mobsters when he and Gandolfini’s bar gets robbed of their money. A great third act and a fantastic, low-key performance from Hardy makes this crime-thriller a must-watch.
