The world premiere for the Assassin’s Creed film landed on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Wednesday, giving a look at Michael Fassbender’s time traveling murder vacation during the Spanish Inquisition. The film doesn’t seem to stray too far from the premise of the video-game series, with Fassbender playing a condemned inmate who seems to be getting a chance to travel back into the body of his ancestor thanks to the Animus.
Instead of any of the historical periods we’ve seen in the games, we’re thrust into the middle of Europe on the verge of the discovery of the New World and still holding tight to some of those older habits. The trailer showcases plenty of the free-running, slow-motion style we’ve come to expect from the game series and even seems to keep those handy carts of hay around for Fassbender to jump into when things are too hot or he needs a safe landing during a jump.
There shouldn’t be any expectations that the story would move too far from the struggle between the Assassins and the Templars, but there’s no telling how deep it will go into the precursors or the whole Juno storyline we’ve seen up to this point. The cooler parts are intact, though, and it doesn’t even seem like we’ve have to battle through mindless repetition this time around.
