Today is National Beer Day, arguably America’s greatest food (er, drink) holiday. Believe it or not, the day does have a bit of a history: 83 years ago, on April 7, 1933, Americans were once again legally able to buy, sell, and drink beer. It was the beginning of the end for Prohibition, which was officially repealed eight months later.
But enough of the history lesson. National Beer Day means we all get a license to start drinking early. And why not celebrate the holiday with a brewski-themed movie or six? If you really want to take it slow, you could pick up a six-pack and make a marathon of the day. Or, you know, just have at it and get entirely trashed.
If you have a favorite beer-themed movie, it probably made the cut. Everything from the third in the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, The World’s End, to my own personal favorite, Strange Brew, is on here, making it a comprehensive way to get wasted. Hooray!
If you’re really feeling historic, though, make sure you stick with lighter beers during your themed marathon—under the Cullen-Harrison Act, which Roosevelt signed into law on March 22, 1933, only beers containing up to 4.05% ABV were legal to buy and sell. So, no Trappist Ales or Wee Heavies tonight. (And anyway, this is America. You should be sticking to American brews.)
As Roosevelt said when he signed the act into law, “I think this would be a good time for a beer.” Cheers, Roosevelt. Eighty-three years later, we agree.
