We already knew William Hurt would be reprising his Incredible Hulk role of General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in Captain America: Civil War, even though he was left out of Marvel’s cast announcement. Bringing him back at the same time as they may start dropping hints about Oscorp, are rumored to want Matthew McConaughey as Norman Osborn, and are definitely introducing Daniel Brühl as Baron Helmut Zemo has led some to speculate that the Thunderbolts team could be coming. We’re just putting that out there because it ties into the new rumors today.
First, We Are Wakanda reported that a source on the Captain America: Civil War set told them “another Hulk will be joining Banner in the MCU very soon,” although they wouldn’t spoil which one. (Thunderbolt Ross was the Red Hulk in the comics, though, so they may as well spoil it.) MCU Exchange then reported a source told them “Thunderbolt Ross will indeed be hulking out in Civil War.”
There was already a small reason to believe Mark Ruffalo might be in Civil War, but it would take something big to bring Hulk back to the team after he left at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Red Hulk would definitely be an impetus for Bruce to come back, even though neither Hulk nor Red Hulk were involved in the Civil War comics storyline. That does make us skeptical of these rumors. On the other hand, Tim Roth said he nearly returned as Abomination in Avengers: Age of Ultron, so we know the powers that be at Marvel aren’t averse to bringing back Incredible Hulk characters who can pose a real challenge for the Hulk.
