The First Trailer For Neill Blomkamp’s Robot Sci-Fi ‘Chappie’ Is Strangely Heartwarming

This first trailer just dropped for District 9 director Neill Blomkamp’s next film, Chappie. It stars the voice and mo-cap work of Sharlto Copley (Elysium, District 9, the sweetie man) as Chappie, the childlike, independent-minded, titular robot created by Dev Patel. The film also stars Hugh Jackman as an anti-AI activist who doesn’t like how quickly Chappie is learning. “The problem with Artificial Intelligence is it’s way too unpredictable,” Jackman says, while showcasing an awesome mullet.

Chappie also features the acting debut of Die Antwoord’s Ninja and Yolandi Vi$$er as a couple of zef South Africans who teach Chappie how to be tough. We should have never doubted them when they told us about the film. Coincidentally (not coincidentally), Die Antwoord released a new music video today as well (the NSFW “Ugly Boy”).

Reportedly, the film has a $50 million budget (compared to District 9‘s $30 million). And did we mention it actually seems heartwarming? Chappie is “just a kid” with a dysfunctional family, but he has so much potential. He watches He-Man cartoons and pets dogs! No disassemble Chappie!
