The king of the mockumentary has returned. In August of 2015, it was announced that Christopher Guest, best known for his mockumentaries like This is Spinal Tap, Best in Show, and A Mighty Wind, would be releasing his next film exclusively on Netflix in 2016. Now that we are over halfway through 2016 the anticipation has become palpable, with not much more than the concept and the title — Mascots — having been released to the public.
Today Netflix has changed some of that by finally telling the world when to expect the upcoming Guest mockumentary about the ultra-competitive world of sports mascots featuring what Netflix has called “many of his regular troupe of actors,” with the release date being set at October 13th. That means that you could probably expect Jane Lynch, Chris O’Dowd, Parker Posey, and a few of his other regulars to take part in Mascots.
There’s been no word if Guest will be acting in Mascots, but considering his involvement onscreen in past mockumentaries, like his unforgettable role as the band’s lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel in Rob Reiner’s This is Spinal Tap who went to 11, or as the sporting goods store owner and proud owner of his beloved bloodhound, Hubert, in Best in Show.
Needless to say, October 13th Guest will take us into the strange world of sports mascots, even if we aren’t ready.
