After much speculation, Christopher Nolan’s next project has been officially confirmed to be the World War II film Dunkirk. The film is based on the evacuation of the french city during WWII.
Not much is known about the movie, other than that Nolan and his brother Jonathan wrote the script and it may star Kenneth Branagh and Mark Rylance, as well as reunite the director with actor Tom Hardy (sans Bane mask, probably). Aside from Branagh and Hardy, the cast is rumored to be comprised of mostly unknown actors. According to Variety, the big budget production is set to film in France in May and will be shot in many of the same locations where the real-life events took place.
For anyone who isn’t up on history, the Dunkirk evacuation was a major mission in the beginning of WWII that resulted in the rescue of more than 300,000 Belgian, British, and French troops who had been surrounded by German forces and not expected to survive otherwise. Judging from the scope of the actual events, the movie sounds like it’s going to be a beast to direct.
Nolan’s foray into a World War II biopic is a departure from the director’s usual mind-bending, non-linear films. Though he’s won numerous accolades for both his science fiction and comic book films, it will be interesting to see how the director adapts his storytelling style to a real life war drama. But if Spielberg could make Saving Private Ryan after E.T, then Nolan should be fine.
The movie’s set for a May 2017 release date.
