People are coming out of the woodwork to discuss what the seminal music icon David Bowie meant to them. While a lot of people had direct experience working with Bowie, or were friends with him, the impact of Bowie’s death extends well beyond that circle of people. This includes filmmaker James Gunn, who had hopes of having Bowie cameo in the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy.
Gunn, who used the Bowie song “Moonage Daydream” on the acclaimed soundtrack to the hit film Guardians of the Galaxy, discussed the possibility of having Bowie make an appearance in the sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Considering Bowie’s litany of outer space references and influences in his work, it would have been a perfect cameo, perhaps even rivaling his excellent appearance as himself in Zoolander.
Alas, it will not come to pass.
Gunn wrote on Facebook that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige had floated the idea, but that, “I told him nothing in the world would make me happier, but I heard from common friends he wasn’t doing well,” said Gunn, who also says that later he heard maybe it could still work out, which, obviously, turned out to be unfortunately false. He also added that there is a possibility he may include another song from Bowie’s beloved concept album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars in the new movie, which would make Bowie the only artist to appear on the soundtrack to both Guardians movies. It would be a minor tribute, given the scope of Bowie’s impact on music, but hopefully it will come to fruition. Let’s give Bowie one more trip to outer space.
