Director commentaries are usually to DVDs what bonus tracks are to CDs (interesting in theory, boring in execution), unless the director speaking is the ever-opinionated David Fincher, and the DVD is Gone Girl. There’s something about seeing Neil Patrick Harris’ penis that brought out the best in him (understandable), and the most gossipy. As pointed out by Tumblr user Maaarine in March, via Decider, Fincher all but called Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner’s divorce, saying:
“[Nick Dunne] has to do these things in the foreground where he takes out his phone and looks at it and he puts it away so his sister doesn’t see it. There are people who do that and it’s too pointed. But Ben is very, very subtle and there’s a kind of indirectness to the way he can do those things. Probably because he’s so duplicitous.”
Because he’s very good at doing things on the sly, you see. And from Maaarine:
It came out this week that Affleck reportedly “admitted to cheating” on Garner, who he was married to for 10 years. “She tried to leave him a few times,” a source said, “but he would beg her to stay.” Meanwhile, while all this was happening, Fincher wrote a negative review of Daredevil on Amazon, just to really sock it to Affleck. That’s gotta sting.
