Poor Eddie Redmayne. You might think he’s been having a great year after starring in The Theory of Everything and getting married, then having it all topped off with recognition at awards shows. But he admitted that it isn’t all wine and roses: he keeps getting turned down for superhero movies and he reeeeeeeally wants to play a superdude:
“I am an absolute geek. I have auditioned for many of those roles. I love the films. You know how in summer, when studios compete for people to see their summer blockbusters, I am their dream. I see all of them. I would never rule out the opportunity to be in one. I’m not sure people look at me and think ‘hero’, so I’ll have to work on that. I never go near treadmills or weights. I am not Hugh Jackman clearly.”
Imma stop you right there, Eddie Redmayne, because if you’ve been paying any attention, plenty of pale, skinny Brits are getting superhero roles, like your bros Andrew Garfield and Benedict Cumberbatch. So there is a chance it can happen without you having to skip tea to fit in the requisite 10-hour workout. Heck, there’s even a chance you could be Spider-Man if Marvel can get their hands on the character from Fox. And won’t that make you feel better for missing out on both Star-Lord and Harry Osborn?
Redmayne is definitely following the right path to his first superhero movie, establishing himself as a chameleon who can take on roles in everything from large-scale musicals to science fiction (see: Jupiter Ascending). And now he’s got the capital to spend after making himself an awards season darling. It’s just going to be a matter of finding a well-suited character at just the right time. And not blowing the audition.
