The freshly released Angry Birds Movie is currently making a DiBiase-ian haul at the box office. With that, a new reports suggests there’s another contender looking to go from a mobile game titan to a blockbuster motion picture. Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve now entered the “so, there’s going to be a Fruit Ninja movie” phase of our existence.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the game with over one billion downloads to its name is big screen-bound. Tripp Vinson, the dude with the Expendables-friendly name who executive produced Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, will produce this adaptation. If you’d prefer to believe that the film is being backed by Del Monte to increase banana sales, that’s okay too. J.P. Lavin and Chad Damiani have been tapped to write the script, and there’s still the matter of hiring a director to bring the Fruit Ninja story to life. (Maybe this’ll be the project that finally bring Lars Von Trier to America!)
The most intriguing wrinkle in this announcement? The family comedy will be a live action offering. Let the debates begin about whether it’s better to go full CGI with the fruit or use actual produce to give this motion picture a gritty, realistic edge. There’s no set date for when this curiosity will slice its way into being, so it’s best not to think too much about of these things now. We’ve already seen evidence that live action Fruit Ninja activities are pretty darn engaging, so maybe we’re in for a major treat. That, or stoners will just have something mesmerizing to watch other than iTunes visualizer for 90 minutes.
Either way, there’s bound to be a bit of an audience for Fruit Ninja whenever it springs forth.
