Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow was chosen to direct Star Wars: Episode IX to be released in 2019, but not everyone agreed with the hire. Yuri Luiz of São Paulo, Brazil, started a petition to bring George Lucas back to finish the trilogy, even though Lucas sold the franchise for $4 billion in 2012 and recently expressed some displeasure (which he later apologized about) with Disney not taking his suggestions for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The movie is now the highest-grossing domestic release, by the way, so we’re sure Disney’s kicking themselves for going their own way with it.
So, what’s the argument for bringing George Lucas back? The petition — sent to Disney, Lucasfilm, and Kathleen Kennedy — argues it would be “the perfect way to end this new trilogy and make an epic farewell between the father of Star Wars and the whole universe of the galaxy far, far away.”
Were you wondering how many people are clamoring for George Lucas to take Colin Trevorrow’s job? Well, the petition — started a week ago — has a little under 4,500 signatures as of this writing. Unfortunately, there’s no pie chart designating how many of those signatures were made ironically, but it’s only a matter of time before the prequels become cool.
