When it comes to iconic monster films, perhaps none are as memorable as the Toho Godzilla films. While here in the states we get overly-CG’d and slick versions of Godzilla, the Japanese studio behind the legendary films has decided that it’s time to bring the suit back for the first time in over 12 years. The last time that Toho released a Godzilla film was back in 2004 with Godzilla: Final Wars.
Now they are returning to the silver screen in Japan with Godzilla Resurgence. The licensing deal that Toho has in place for Godzilla allowed for them to continue creating domestic films, so they decided after the success of the American reboot of the franchise to once again have Godzilla run amok in Japan and strike fear into the hearts of moviegoers.
This brand new trailer for Godzilla Resurgence shows us a first glimpse at what the legendary destroyer of scale model cities will look like come the July 26th release in Japan. Godzilla Resurgence will be marketed alongside co-director Hideaki Anno’s ongoing reboot of beloved series Neon Genesis Evangelion, called Rebuild of Evangelion. That is pretty much a match made in heaven for fans of Anno as well a Godzilla fans, considering Evangelion was about troubled kids in giant mech suits fighting giant monsters.
