If there’s one criticism that could be leveled at Guardians of the Galaxy, it’s that the movie didn’t really do a huge amount with its female characters. Zoe Saldana’s Gamora and Karen Gillan’s conflicted villain Nebula were good characters, but too often they were stuck in the background. We can be certain breakout fan-favorites like Drax and Groot will have plenty on their plates in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but will Gamora and Nebula be given something to do?
Well, according to Karen Gillan, the sequel will focus on adding some extra depth to the dysfunctional sisterly relationship between Gamora and Nebula.
“I think what I’m really excited about it delving into the sisterly relationship between Gamora and Nebula. I think that we’re going to see more of that, and it’s going to be a bit more fleshed out.”
It would definitely be nice if Gamora and Nebula’s relationship was one of the important emotional cores of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, rather than something that’s just mentioned in passing before a fight scene. Either way, it sounds like Gillan is pretty excited for the new script…
“I took [the script] in my hands — because they don’t send it over email, they deliver it by hand — and it was so cool. I was so excited, and I ran upstairs, and I put on the soundtrack, the Awesome Mixtape 2, and then got into it. It’s so good.”
Ugh, I want this movie right damn now. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters May 5, 2017.
