Iain McCaig knows his Star Wars. The concept artist worked on the Star Wars prequels and The Force Awakens, and is presumably very familiar with the original trilogy, so when he makes a statement about the series, it carries some weight. Well, at a recent conference, McCaig made a pretty big statement that bodes very well for folks looking forward to the Han Solo Anthology movie…
“[The Han Solo movie] has by far the best Star Wars script, and one of the best scripts period, that I have ever read. I laughed, I cried, I did all the things you should do when reading a good script. You’re in for a treat.”
Well, dang! The Han Solo script was written by legendary Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark scribe Lawrence Kasdan, with some additions by his son Joe Kasdan and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller. It’s not exactly shocking the script is good, but it’s nice to hear this project is on solid ground.
According to Making Star Wars, McCaig dropped a few other interesting tidbits at this conference. They don’t provide exact quotes, but he apparently let slip that George Lucas submitted a full Episode VII script to Disney, but had it shot down because it contained characters from the prequels. That said, some of the script’s broader ideas may have made it into The Force Awakens. On a more controversial note, Disney was also apparently concerned that Lucas’ script contained too many non-Caucasian characters. Take these extra tidbits with a grain of salt, but they’re certainly eyebrow-raising if true.
The Han Solo movie is slated for a May 25, 2018 release.
