The casting process to find a young Han Solo for the planned prequel took months upon months before the production located a perfect candidate. Now that Alden Ehrenreich is in place as the titular smuggler, the search is on for additional young versions of famed Star Wars characters. The next major casting decision will reportedly be for a 20-something version of noted backstabber Lando Calrissian. Of course, Lando doesn’t turn on Han and the group until they are both much older men so the casting description will probably go something like “a seemingly nice guy who has lots of fun and then will do something reprehensible in a few decades.”
There is no word on how big the role would be for a young Lando, but seeing as he was the owner of the Millennium Falcon before Han it only makes sense that he would appear in some manner. According to Nerdist, Donald Glover is the rumored frontrunner for the role. Of course, Donald Glover has been the frontrunner for a few other iconic roles recently (Spider-Man being the key opportunity that didn’t pan out) so it sure seems like Hollywood is still in the mindset to offer Glover every role that might be good for him until one actually clicks. While he wouldn’t be a bad choice by any means, Donald isn’t the only name on the table. What about Aldis Hodge, currently on WGN’s Underground? Or Anthony Mackie, who everybody knows can pull off “slightly sarcastic but fun guy” very well.
There are a ton of options, and at this early stage we have no clue which rumors are true or not. This could be a fun casting process though, and an opportunity for another up-and-coming actor to make his mark.
