Regardless of anything said about Suicide Squad and its possibly chaotic production, the DC Extended Universe tentpole still broke records and just passed $700 million in box office earnings. Which means Warner is still rumored to be planning an R-rated sequel and a Harley Quinn spin-off produced by and starring Harley Quinn herself, Margot Robbie. Now we have an update on the latter.
Margot Robbie just inked a first-look deal with Warner Bros. to develop and produce movies — including the Harley Quinn spinoff — with Warner through her LuckyChap Entertainment banner. LuckyChap is currently in postproduction on Terminal and is developing two other films: Bad Monkeys and a Tonya Harding biopic (I, Tonya) starring Robbie in the titular role. She is also producing and starring in Warner’s adaptation of Dean N. Jensen’s Queen Of The Air. Meanwhile, a certain blogger can’t remember to pick up the towering heap of granola bar wrappers next to his computer chair, so things are going great for everyone.
As for what the Harley Quinn spinoff will entail, THR‘s article about the news supports rumors of a Birds Of Prey based story, saying the spinoff will also feature “other DC heroines” without specifying which ones. The move forward is part of Warner’s recent push for more female-driven productions, which is a financially-wise decision.
More female-driven storytelling? We like the sound of that.
