What’s a great way to build buzz for your Harry Potter prequel spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them? Rerelease all the films in IMAX! There’s just one problem – it’s only for a week.
Warner Bros. is trying to kill us right? They realize we’re (mostly) grown adults with jobs? I don’t have time for this. When I was in college I spent an entire day in a theater to watch the extended editions of Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers plus the first showing of Return of the King. It was great! But it was one day.
The studio just announced the Harry Potter series would get an exclusive IMAX engagement for one week only starting October 13th. That’s eight films. They’ll all be in 2D and include some special footage from Fantastic Beasts.

“Accio, Potterheads! For the first time ever, you can experience all eight Harry Potter movies in IMAX…no Time-Turner necessary,” writes IMAX. But honestly, a Time-Turner would be very helpful. Fantastic Beasts debuts on November 18th so I’m not sure why they didn’t choose to play all of them for a whole month. I think they’re underestimating the Potterhead market here.
This will be the first time Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets will be see in the IMAX format so that’s something if you’re an IMAX fan. You can find out how to purchase tickets here. Thought it doesn’t appear all the showings are on sale yet, apparently some places will let you do a package deal:
Tickets will be available by means of four separate admission packages: Single Ticket; Day Access (admittance to three or more shows in a single day); Four-Show Access (admittance to four shows any time, any day); and Festival Access (unlimited admittance throughout the event). Packages offered and pricing may vary by theatre.
There will also be a special live event with the Fantastic Beasts cast to kick off the IMAX engagement. Information for this one is online. The worldwide fan event will kick off on Thursday, October 13th, at 8:30 p.m. GMT (3:30 p.m. EDT, 12:30 p.m. PDT) and simultaneously in major cities in the U.S. and internationally.”
