Studio Ghibli co-founder and Walt Disney of the anime world Hayao Miyazaki made a rare trip to Hollywood to accept a Lifetime Achievement Oscar at the Governors Awards. He accepted the award over the weekend (video above), and it took us this long to notice because I don’t speak Japanese, okay? GEEZ.
More importantly, Miyazaki dropped some good news and bad news while speaking to AP reporters before the awards ceremony. He’s not as retired as we thought, but he is moving into short-form work instead of his iconic full-length films. We don’t have a video of his interview, but Rocket News provides the quotes:
Miyazaki said: “I’m going to continue making anime until I die.”
[…] Miyazaki reiterated that he’s done with [full-length films], saying he wants to “leave such things to the next generation of animators.”
Please live forever, Hayao Miyazaki.
