September is nearly here, and with that comes a whole host of new content from HBO Now, available for your enjoyment and perusal. Many of last fall’s theatrical releases are coming to the safety of your living room via the streaming service, including The Revenant, Sisters, Steve Jobs, and The Forest. Classic movies like The Great Muppet Caper, Ghost World, and Rushmore are also hitting HBO Now, ready to make new generations of fans. On top of all these great movies, two of HBO’s comedies, Ballers and Vice Principals, close out their respective seasons and the long-awaited debut of The Larry Sanders Show is finally here.
The Revenant, 2015 (9/17)
If you haven’t yet seen the movie that finally helped Leonardo DiCaprio snag his Oscar, you should definitely check out this brutal yet beautiful film. As DiCaprio’s Hugh Glass survives a scalping, a bear attack, and the wretched frontier elements as he hunts down Tom Hardy’s Fitzgerald. With Alejandro Iñárritu’s visual flair, The Revenant is proof that man can overcome seemingly insurmountable odds when they’re seeking revenge (and awards glory).
Sisters, 2015 (9/10)
Comedic powerhouses Amy Poehler and Tina Fey reunite onscreen for the first time since Baby Mama in Sisters, directed by Pitch Perfect‘s Jason Moore. Poehler’s Type A and Fey’s wild child reunite at their parents’ home, and in an attempt to shake up both of their stagnant lives, throw one last rager before the house is sold. Things, of course, get out of hand, making it a night to remember for all involved. While the film may not reach the heights of 30 Rock or Parks and Recreation, Poehler and Fey’s easy chemistry makes this a must-see.
Ballers Season 2 Finale (9/25)
Picking up where Entourage left off while replacing Hollywood with the NFL, Dwayne Johnson’s Ballers kept up the momentum from season one, proving that there isn’t a project that Johnson can’t make better. As the second season comes to a close, the question remains: can you maintain this kind of lifestyle without crumbling under pressure?
The Larry Sanders Show (9/23)
As we’ve written about before, Garry Shandling’s greatest legacy may be the careers that he helped launch and inspire, but The Larry Sanders Show is a close second. Roundly revered as one of the smartest comedies in television history and a fantastic dissection of neurosis and Hollywood, The Larry Sanders Show has been one of the most notable omissions from HBO’s streaming options. Thankfully, before Shandling’s untimely death, he worked with HBO to secure a deal that will allow The Larry Sanders Show to continue influencing comedy fans who can now easily discover it and take in its brilliance.
