We’ve been hearing about a new He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe movie for a long, long time. It’s been in the works for more than a decade at this point, but with shared universes all the rage and Hollywood reviving anything it can get its hands on, it seems likely that McG will get to bring back Prince Adam, Cringer, and the rest of the gang. And apparently it’ll be a bit edgier than we thought!
Talking to IGN, McG reveals they’re in the middle of polishing the script, and then he talks about, well, pretty much everything that was a hit in the last five years:
We also need to be cognizant of the incredible resonance of what Kevin Feige is doing with Marvel, and the balance of full-bodied entertainment. That it’s both credible and emotional, action-packed, and the story of a hero’s journey. It’s the genesis of He-Man, it’s the becoming of He-Man. We want it to be clicking on all cylinders in that regard…. Obviously, we’re all cognizant of what’s going on with Game of Thrones. It’s incredible. We’re cognizant of what’s going on in Guardians of the Galaxy. James Gunn’s doing a great job. We’re going to try to answer the call and take it higher.
To be fair, He-Man’s been doing quite a bit of growing up lately, in terms of storytelling. Over at DC Comics, they’ve just wrapped up an extended series written by heavyweights like Dan Abnett and Keith Giffen that fleshes out the motives of villains like Skeletor and turns the series into a more serious high-fantasy story without forgetting that it’s still based on a cartoon with a talking tiger. It managed to give a cartoon most notable for Skeletor’s love of the word “boob” a genuine dramatic heft. If McG can do that, it’ll be a movie worth watching.
Failing that, we nominate Orko to be the Joffrey. Come on, you know you want to see that flying little annoyance die.
