Suicide Squad may not have been popular with critics, but it did break records and gross more than $700 million, ensuring the Harley Quinn spin-off moves forward. It may also mean the R-rated sequel David Ayer’s been planning may get the green light, and Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney, mushroom enthusiast) expressed his desire for a sequel when he spoke to MTV’s Josh Horowitz for the most recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Courtney’s interview comes near the end of the episode, after guests Emma Stone and Lily James.
Horowitz opened the interview by asking Courtney if he was surprised by some of the negative reviews. Here’s what he had to say, as transcribed by Comic Book Movie:
“How do you please everyone? And I don’t think Suicide Squad ever intended to…. So no one’s setting out to upset the fan base, certainly not a fan base that can be as loyal as this kind of crowd can. But I don’t know how you can push the envelope or try and protect something [without taking risks]. … I know what I like in a movie, and it’s not the same thing as my twelve-year-old niece. … It’s a challenge, and David [Ayer] did an incredible job, and I sure as hell hope we get to make another one with him.”
He also spoke about Marvel, specifically how they’re at an advantage right now by having more groundwork laid out so far in their extended universe, as transcribed by Batman News:
“They’ve had the time to let that sh*t marinate. Everything’s established now, we don’t have to figure out who anyone is. It’s like ‘Cool. Get them all together and let’s have a f*cking orgy and make a billion dollars’.”
We’re pretty sure “Let’s have a f*cking orgy and make a billion dollars” is the official Marvel Studios motto right now.
Horowitz also asked Courtney about rumors he’d show up in The Flash, which would make sense. Captain Boomerang has been a frequent rogue in Flash comics, and the cinematic version of Flash captured Boomerang in a Suicide Squad scene guest directed by Zack Snyder. Courtney answered, “Is that the rumor? I like that rumor. I like that a lot.”
Ah, but does he like it as much as Pinky the unicorn?
