Jared Leto’s penchant for method acting is already well-known on the set of The Suicide Squad. Co-star Scott Eastwood has already mentioned that he doesn’t approach Leto on the set for fear of messing up his thing. Meanwhile, Jai Courtney — who plays Captain Boomerang — said that he hasn’t even seen Leto out of character on set yet.
Leto is going full Jim Carrey-as-Andy-Kaufman on this movie. In fact, he’s taken his method acting a step further: he gave gifts to his co-stars as the Joker. He apparently wasn’t on set much early on in the shoot, so he sent gifts to make his presence known, reports E!:
“He sent [Margot Robbie] a nice love letter with a black box with a rat in it—a live rat,” Adam Beach, who plays Slipnot in the Warner Bros. film, said. “It was beautiful. Then he sent bullets to Will [Smith] with a letter.”
The cast also received a video and—get ready for it!—a “dead hog.”
“Basically, what he said was, ‘Guys, I can’t be there but I want you to know I’m doing my work as hard as you guys,'” Beach said. “The video he showed is in character. It blew our minds away. Then we realized that day, this is real.”
Yes, Jared Leto’s self-aggrandizing behavior is “real,” but maybe what he doesn’t realize is that he can’t actually win an Oscar for behind-the-scenes performance. Maybe dial it down just a notch, Leto. This is Suicide Squad, not My Left Foot.
