Happy Mother’s Day? More like “happy” Mother’s Day, form both Darren Aronofsky and Jennifer Lawrence. In anticipation of their upcoming movie together, Aronofsky shared the first poster for mother! on Twitter, and it is something! A bit of a gruesome piece of art to share on a holiday about mothers, but it’s probably only fair that people celebrate all kinds of mothers on such a holiday, even if they do happen to be holding a heart in their hands. In the poster, Lawrence is dressed in virginal white and surrounded by flowers, but that’s where the fun and happy aspects of it end.

Lawrence also happens to have a huge, bloody hole in her chest and is holding her own heart in her hands. So that’s an interesting twist on an otherwise innocent poster design. Which is the whole point, of course, as mother! is a movie that focuses on a couple whose relationship is altered when uninvited guests visit their home. Not exactly a comedic romp, there. Besides Lawrence, it also stars Javier Bardem, Michelle Pfieffer (the Pfiefferseance is here!), Ed Harris, and Domhnall Gleason.
There’s not much information available on the project besides the cast and this first image, so the unsettling nature of the poster goes a long way towards setting the spirit of the movie and letting audiences adjust to the potentially odd tone of Aronofsky’s latest work. Much of the other work of the artist James Jean, the poster’s creator, has a similar feeling to it even though nothing else is as blatantly…bloody. While the poster itself doesn’t offer much in the way of concrete plot points of story hints, it certainly piques audience interest in the project and at the very least is a highly unique first piece of marketing.
