Despite having pretty concurrent successful careers, Jimmy Stewart and Stanley Kubrick never worked together. Stewart’s “nice-guy” persona may have been the reason for that… in fact, that’s probably exactly the reason for that. That’s why this mashup by the Paris-based Gump Studios is so fantastic. While it’s basically a great example of good fan fiction, The Red Drum Getaway places Stewart, borrowing from his roles in Alfred Hitchock movies, in the midst of a Kubrickian rabbit hole where he crosses paths with characters from The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket, and more of the director’s classics. But it’s when he catches a glimpse inside the world of Eyes Wide Shut do we realize how weirdly cool it would have been to see Stewart confront some truly perverse folks.
A cinephile can dream. But in the meantime, we have The Red Drum Getaway.
