After 15 months of marriage, Amber Heard filed for divorce from Johnny Depp citing “irreconcilable differences” on Monday, TMZ reports. This news comes just three days after Depp’s mother passed away after a long illness.
The couple kept most of the details of their relationship out of the public eye, outside of the “Australian Puppy-Smuggling Scandal“, where Heard was caught importing her pet puppies, Boo and Pistol, illegally into the country by Australian officials in 2015. A month ago, the couple released a super awkward apology video to the Australian government for breaking its laws.
In 2009, the actors met on the set of The Rum Diary and were married in February of last year in two separate ceremonies, one in West Hollywood at Depp’s mansion and the other on his private island in the Bahamas. Recently, the pair had not been seen together publicly. Depp missed his Met Gala appearance, backing out at the last minute, although Heard was there alone according to US Weekly. The actor also walked the red carpet at the Alice Through the Looking Glass premiere on Monday solo.
Heard shot down rumors that were swirling back in November that pointed to the couple’s marriage being on the rocks. “I try not to react to the horrible misrepresentation of our lives, but it is strange and hard,” she told Marie Claire. The actress is allegedly asking for spousal support and the couple did not have a prenup, a source told TMZ.
Depp seemed to be in good spirits Monday, despite the heart-wrenching news of his mother’s passing. He appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, surprising Pink and he also lip-locked with Kimmel. Alice Through the Looking Glass hits theaters on May 27.
