The love of dinosaurs, or at least the movie version of dinosaurs, is deep and seemingly eternal; more than a decade after Jurassic Park III, Jurassic World has brought in $1 billion in less than two weeks.
It’s broken a whole bunch of records, starting with “The fastest movie to $1 billion,” a record set just a few weeks ago by Furious 7. It’s also got the biggest second weekend of all time, it now holds the record for the fastest movie to $400 million at the U.S. box office, and is the fastest movie to $500 million at the international box office. Oh, and it’s beaten the first film’s gross by a third.
As for various Internet hyperbole records, if a browse of Twitter is any indication, Jurassic World has also brought about the end of paleontology, the end of film, and one assumes as it continues to make money it will bring about the end of all things, possibly with Chris Pratt as our huggable fuzzy Anti-Christ. I tease, of course, but that the movie A) made a pile of money and B) is, well, kinda dumb isn’t really a huge shock, and yet many seem surprised at both. I recommend watching the original without the nostalgia filter; it’ll explain a lot.
The lesson, of course, is that we love monster movies, especially monster movies that cut the crap and start munching on civilians while simultaneously giving off a warm glow of nostalgia. So, Universal… can we cross over Jurassic Park and Pacific Rim already?
