Well, it looks like Gambit may have found his leading lady. Earlier this month, a shortlist of up-and-coming actresses vying for the female lead in the upcoming X-Men spin-off — including Rebecca Ferguson, Lea Seydoux, and Abbey Lee — was released. According to Deadline, Seydoux emerged as the frontrunner and has been offered the female lead opposite star Channing Tatum.
If she accepts the role, she will be portraying the psychic mutant Bella Donna Boudreaux, former wife and lover of Gambit. To say they share a complicated history would be an understatement; there may have been a few murder attempts on her part. Hopefully she’ll get a stronger role than Lynn Collins did in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Seydoux is certainly one to watch these days. After breaking out in Blue Is the Warmest Color, Midnight in Paris, and The Grand Budapest Hotel, the French actress is also a Bond Girl in this fall’s Spectre. Ferguson and Lee would have been solid picks, as well, impressing audiences in Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation and Mad Max: Fury Road respectively, but maybe this will give Ferguson a crack at Captain Marvel instead.
Gambit is rumored to begin shooting in October with an Oct. 7, 2016, release date.
