We’ve already talked about The Lego Batman Movie digging deep into Batman’s rogues gallery for some, ah, questionable villains for him to fight. And it turns out, in this “extended TV spot” which is basically a new trailer, that was just the start of the Bat-gags.
The trailer does get into the plot a little bit: After Batman hurts the Joker’s feelings by saying he’s not Batman’s arch-nemesis, the Joker gets every villain he can find from the heavy-hitters we all know to scrubs like the Condiment King (and yes, as the trailer tells us, that is a real villain, albeit one with an unusual history.) Batman has to open up, share his feelings, and put together a Bat-team to put the villains back in their place.
In the meantime, though, the trailer is packed with Batman jokes. Some of them are subtle, like a “Batman Forever” sign in a protesting crowd. Others are full-on nerd, like the dancing Superfriends we see in one cut or the fact that at the end of the trailer, the Joker is rubbing his butt on some classic Batman vehicles from the ’40s and ’50s, including one of the original Batmobiles. The Penguin even has his giant rubber duck from Batman Returns! We’ll see how many other Bat-gags make it to the screen February 10th.
