We’ve been hearing about a Logan’s Run remake for decades. Warner Bros. has been working on it since at least the mid-’90s, with attempting to make it being a pit stop for pretty much every hot writer and director at some point. And the latest to be put on this particular creative carousel is Simon Kinberg.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Kinberg’s ostensibly overseeing the writing, but reading between the lines, it’s his job to just get this thing made, already:
Kinberg is being hired to write the story and treatment for the movie project. He will also join Joel Silver as a producer on the project. The script will be tackled by a writer to be hired in the near future.
Oh, and for those who like grumbling over marketing terms, the fact that the article calls it “the OG of the post-apocalyptic YA genre” should tell you what the goal is here, although the rumor that Logan is a woman this time goes unmentioned. Again, I will point out this is a movie where Michael York fights a talking freezer.
Will it finally happen this time? Good question. Kinberg’s a busy guy with a reputation for getting things done; he’s producing and writing movies for both the X-Men and Star Wars franchises. It seems that he’s less around to be hands-on with this production and more that he’s around to just get it out of pre-production so somebody else can take over.
Myself, I think Warners should just see the crystal flashing and put this remake out of its misery. The last time they spent decades and millions trying to remake a movie, they wound up with Superman Returns and video of Nic Cage in a ridiculous outfit. Either give a filmmaker a smaller budget and total creative control, or just let this one go.
