Halloween is nearly here, which also means we’re in a real sweet spot of the calendar for scary movie and vampire porn aficionados. Sensibly, the UK’s Film4 channel has sat down with a number of horror aficionados to gain some insight into why they love this blood-splattered genre so much. Um, the scary movie genre, not the vampire porn genre.
M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense), Eli Roth (Hostel), Alice Lowe (Prevenge), Tim Burton (Sleepy Hollow), and loads more cinephiles weigh in on what’s so appealing about fare meant to terrify the viewer. Naturally, carnage enthusiast Roth has been all over notorious releases for a long time. Who wouldn’t go with their parents to see Pieces and Basket Case, right?
“I was the freak in the neighborhood,” explained Roth. “If you wanted to see a Video Nasty, you came over to Eli’s house. I mean, I had everything, I had Evil Dead, I had Dawn of the Dead, I had Faces of Death, I even had movies like Pink Flamingos which on the disgusting level was off the charts.”
Roth understand good taste is for cowards and wealthy dowagers. That’s what makes him a pro. There’s no shortage of quality stories and observations in this video package (like Shyamalan fessing up to childhood Ouija antics), so it’s best to give this charming collection a shot from front to back.
