Margot Robbie stands in an excellent position with the highly anticipated role of Harley Quinn in the Suicide Squad film. The movie’s ensemble cast fills out the rank of DC Comics’ major supervillains, but everyone’s looking forward to seeing Robbie’s delivery. Will Smith as Deadshot? Also intriguing — largely because Smith usually isn’t an ensemble player — but much of the audience’s eagerness comes down to Harley and Jared Leto as the Joker.
Leto has some enormous clown shoes to fill in this role, for he will inevitably be compared to Heath Ledger’s iconic take on the Joker. Robbie spoke with the New York Daily News as she finished principal photography on the film. She called Leto’s performance “pretty impressive” because he nearly scared the bejesus out of her (and not simply because he gifted her a live rat since he’s so method):
“What he’s doing with the character is so cool. At first it was kind of confronting (to be up close) but now I’m so used to it, I think if I ever saw him out of makeup now I would be really confused. Actually, I saw him out of makeup once and I was actually petrified of him. I was too scared to go up and didn’t know who that person was, and when he got back into his makeup I was far more comfortable.”
Robbie also explained why this gathering of supervillains should end up on your calendar (come August 2016). She didn’t give a hard sell, but she didn’t need to either:
“I guess the one common denominator is we’re all bad guys, it just makes everything more fun that way. The scenes are more interesting I feel, when you just don’t know how the characters are going to react, especially with Harley, who’s absolutely nuts … she’s either going to kill you or laugh and give you a hug.”
Robbie goes on to briefly lament losing out on the Invisible Woman role in the disastrous Fantastic Four reboot, but not really. She said, “I had a great meeting with the director, and I really enjoyed that.” Then came a telling statement: “I guess it’s part of the game: Sometime you win some, sometimes you lose some.” Yep, Margot Robbie knows exactly what she’s doing, and she almost certainly won this game of comic-book movie casting.
