It’s really amazing, if you think about it. Boogie Nights came out nearly eighteen years ago and to this day, everybody is still fascinated by Mark Wahlberg’s monster prosthetic dong in the film. With Inherent Vice coming out this week, Grantland put together a fascinating oral history on Paul Thomas Anderson’s second film, but of course all anyone could focus on (ourselves included) was the part about the fake wiener. It really is a testament to how good of a fake wiener it was.
So when Mark Wahlberg dropped by Late Night with Seth Meyers last night, the topic of conversation turned to, you guessed it: monster dong! Wahlberg was happy to discuss the topic, however, and related just how awkward it was to have to wear the thing around on the set all day. (He couldn’t even go to the bathroom!) He also says that in all his years of doing films, it was the only prop he kept, and — if you’re lucky! — he might auction it off someday.
If you ask me, a fake wiener that was used in a movie is much more valuable than your kids college education. Although that’s not saying much, what with the value of a college degree these days.
