When Captain America: Civil War hits theaters in May, we’ll suddenly be knee-deep in Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which continues until May 2019 when Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2 hits. But what happens after that? Phase 4, of course, but Marvel has yet to officially announce any specific projects. It seems likely Inhumans will slip to Phase 4, but aside from that, fans are in the dark.
That is, until all-powerful Marvel Studios overlord Kevin Feige just outed one of the first official Phase 4 project in an interview with io9:
“We’re only working on what’s been announced through the end of 2019. And it is still a big chess board for 2020 and beyond, but certainly I would say Guardians 3 is one film that’s up there. I don’t know what exactly the order will be.”
Time to start working on that third Awesome Mix, James Gunn. I don’t think anybody was surprised when Marvel announced Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but third movies aren’t a guarantee, so it’s cool to see Marvel has enough confidence in James Gunn’s vision to go for the full trilogy.
Currently, Marvel has three 2020 dates staked out (May 1, July 10 and November 6), so Inhumans and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could occupy two or those. Of course, Marvel’s Phases typically span three years, so they could also come out in 2021 or 2022. In other news, I’m totally not ready to think about the fact that we’re almost living in the 2020s.
What do you folks think? Happy Guardians is getting the trilogy treatment? What other movies would you like to see show up in Marvel’s Phase 4?
