Matthew McConaughey seems poised to dip his toes into another Stephen King adaptation, this time one that is even more epic than The Stand. The Wrap is reporting that McConaughey is in talks to take on a key role in the upcoming adaptation of The Dark Tower, but possibly not in the role you might assume he’d be playing:
While insiders insist it’s early and neither side has committed, they admit preliminary discussions have taken place and both parties are interested in striking a deal.
Though The Wrap was initially told that McConaughey was being eyed to play gunslinger Roland Deschain, which was correct, subsequent trade reports suggest he was offered that role as well as the villainous Man in Black, and that McConaughey is leaning toward embracing his dark side. The actor is the rare A-lister without a movie franchise, but that could change be about to change, regardless of what role he chooses.
The obvious thing here — and this is a spoiler for The Dark Tower series — is that The Man In Black and Randall Flagg are the same person. That would mean, according to the reports so far, that McConaughey is going to be our Flagg. Jamey Sheridan, you and your wonderful singing will be missed. It’s just going to be hard to compete with McConaughey as a laid-back, purely evil “Walkin’ Dude.”
