Dreamworks Face: The Motion Picture
Michel Gondry is probably best known for writing and directing Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (which garnered him an Academy Award for the best original screenplay), as well as directing Be Kind Rewind, Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, and numerous brilliant music videos. He also made The Green Hornet starring Seth Rogen. Welp.
Gondry’s newest film is Microbe & Gasoline, currently in theaters in New York and Los Angeles. To promote the new project, he spoke to The Hollywood Reporter in a long interview touching on many subjects, but we’re here for the superhero news.
When asked about the worst moment of his career, he pegged his work on the first version of The Green Hornet, which he was scripting for Universal with Ed Neumeier (of the original RoboCop) nearly 20 years ago. Eventually he was able to make a different version of the film, with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s script. It was pushed to January and given a last-minute 2D to 3D conversion. (Ugh, remember when every movie was getting those? Dark times.) Oh well, at least it gave Eddie Furlong a job.
Gondry hasn’t made a studio film since The Green Hornet, and he explained to The Hollywood Reporter that the reason why is because “it’s hard to fall in love with the big movies, expensive movies, where you go on board and the script is already quite advanced. By this time, I feel that there is not enough room for me to be creative or to feel connected to the character and the story.”
With that quote in mind, it shouldn’t be surprising Gondry is ruling out one genre of films from now on. When asked if he’d ever do another big budget movie, he replied, “Yeah, why not? But not a superhero one.”
Well, there goes our dream of Michel Gondry directing Anna Kendrick as Squirrel Girl.
