The mass appeal of Minions has taken over pop culture. They’re on movie screens, and in your tampon boxes. Thanks to a promotional deal with McDonald’s, the Minions are also in Happy Meal boxes nationwide. However, some not-so-thrilled parents noticed that these toy Minions appear to be saying, “What the f*ck?” One parent posted this video evidence to YouTube. Other people are hearing it, too, and a Columbus, Ohio news station put out outrage feelers:
“As soon as we heard it, her mom took it away,” said Robert Frazier, a father who bought several for his three young children. “I listened to it and that’s when we found out that’s what it was saying.”
“Unless I was looking for it, I probably would not think much about it,” said Jerry Gerken. “Now that I’m looking for it, it does sound like ‘WTF’.”
“I definitely heard it,” said Allison Hayes. “I think it was more in my head really.”
“It’s a minion,” said Nick Murnan. “That’s probably the sound they would make.”
A Minion dropping an f-bomb is something one can’t unhear. Once you’re convinced of the offense, the jig is up. In response, McDonald’s issued a statement: “Minions speak ‘Minionese’ which is a random combination of many languages and nonsense words and sounds. ‘Minionese’ has no translation to, or meaning in any recognized language. Any perceived similarities to words used within the English language is purely coincidental.”
