A new trailer has surfaced today for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, and it is a good example of creative trailer editing. With large studio rollouts like these, we tend to get epic trailers that all look alike and have the same tone to each one. Being epic is not a problem, but keeping the same tone can, most of the time, get old fast and become a cinematic downer.
Lionsgate has successfully pulled off a trailer that pinpoints the nervous system of The Hunger Games — the sisterly relationship that was the original catalyst for Katniss volunteering for the games. She could not bear to see her young sister be killed, or worse, kill, so she interjected. This trailer captures that passion and sacrifice.
Young adult sci-fi has become a point of teasing and mockery (and, on a whole, deservedly so), but this trailer is a genuine cut above the rest. Not to mention, the inclusion of M83 is always a plus. Notice the similarities with the below trailer for Rust and Bone.
Yeah, that song works pretty damn well in trailers. Nicely done.
