After a much discussed snub at this year’s Academy Awards, Straight Outta Compton took the True Story Award at Sunday evening’s airing of the MTV Movie Awards. And boy, did the cast ever enjoy this onstage opportunity. Actor Jason Mitchell, who played the late Eazy-E, even took a not-so-subtle shot during the cast’s acceptance speech. He kept it relatively nice though, and the audience laughed along while understanding all too well.
First though, DJ Yella took the mic to pay verbal tribute to his fellow N.W.A. members. He shouted out to Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, MC Ren, and of course, the late “motherf*cking Eazy-E.” The steadfast Cube has always kept some common sense about the Oscar snub, but the omission deserved to be acknowledged onstage. So, Mitchell stepped up and did the honors. He faked out with this message: “I would like to take a moment to thank the Academy.” Then he faux apologizing by adding adding, “My bad, my bad, my bad, sorry.”
Even though this was only the MTV Movie Awards, this was still a moment that should be remembered in awards show history. Not only did this movie do extremely well in a commercial sense without the Oscars boost, Straight Outta Compton got the last (deserved) word.
