Everyone’s favorite streaming service is adding some more cutting edge sci-fi to its ever-expanding lineup of programming. Netflix announced that The Discovery directed by Charlie McDowell will be made for the service and will also have a theatrical release.
The Discovery stars Rooney Mara, Robert Redford, and Jason Segel and will take place a few years after the concept of an afterlife has been proven to be an actual place. People here on Earth then decided to commit suicide en masse in order to start a fresh life. Redford will play the person who makes the discovery, Segel plays his son, and Mara will be Segel’s love interest “with a tragic past”. Filming takes place in Rhode Island. There has not been an announcement for a release date yet, but according to Deadline, The Discovery should hit the streaming service and land in theaters next year. Netflix did the exact thing last November with Beasts Of No Nation starring Idris Elba.
Netflix is really upping the ante when it comes to indie produced feature length films. The Discovery has joined a list of new productions that will be on the streaming service including The Fundamentals of Caring starring Paul Rudd and Selena Gomez and Tallulah starring Ellen Page and Allison Janney.
