After what has felt like months and months of blind speculation over which films will make the voters’ cut and score an invitation to Oscar night, the wait is finally over. This morning, 13 Hours star John Krasinski announced the official slate of nominees along with directors Ang Lee and Guillermo del Toro from Los Angeles’ Samuel Goldwyn Theater. With the full lineup for the 88th annual Academy Awards now fully announced, we can put an end to the speculation over which of our favorite stars will add “Oscar nominee” to their résumé, and begin the speculating over who will actually win. That’ll continue on through the telecast February 28 on ABC, at which point we will then shift back to speculating on which 2016 films will be nominated in the next year’s Academy Awards. Speculating is good, clean fun!
For the first time in a long time, a handful of frontrunners have emerged with none breaking away from the pack, making it an exciting year to give a damn about the Academy Awards. Keep scrolling to get the entire lowdown on one of the most uncertain, genuinely surprising Oscar races in years, and then be sure to check back in later today for our deeper analysis of the major races, and what this all means for Hollywood at large.
