What’s that line that Eli Cash drops in The Royal Tenenbaums about his latest book? “Well, everyone knows Custer died at Little Bighorn. What this book presupposes is… maybe he didn’t.” Okay, now swap out the “everyone knows Custer died at Little Bighorn” bit with “everyone knows Luke and Owen Wilson aren’t the same person” and you’ve got the premise of the awesome and borderline surreal supercut nestled above.
The fascinating/mystifying force behind Owenergy Studios (the internet’s premier Owen Wilson video service) has presented the argument that Luke and Owen are the same damn guy. Probably not so much during Luke’s AT&T pitchman years, but essentially they can come across as the same dude. A three minute supercut provides the receipts as both Owen and Luke are showcased sharing a surprising amount of the same dialogue in their careers. It’s not just the fact that lines/catchphrases have been generously recycled, but sometimes the delivery seems to be semi-shared too.
Granted, some of the similarity is probably tied to simple stuff like “they’re brothers, dude!” and “everybody says ‘take it easy’ in movies,” but it still feels sort of eerie. For some bonus Luke + Owen action where they’re actually in the same room, let’s revisit this clip from The Royal Tenenbaums and see if we can all tighten up our Wilson brother impressions together. Heck, it seems like you only need to learn one.
