Sony Pictures Entertainment has just released the first trailer for Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt’s big budget sci-fi romance story Passengers, directed by Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game).
As expected, they seem to have changed the part of the original script where Pratt’s character intentionally wakes up Lawrence’s character after his hibernation pod fails and he realizes he’ll be alone for 90 years, condemning her to die on the ship along with him. Now both characters wake up presumably due to a malfunction in their hibernation pods, making it more of a Titanic-style disaster romance than a creepy horror story about an insanely abusive space stalker. They still reveal “there’s a reason we woke up early,” but now it at least appears Pratt’s character may end up being a hero instead of a villain.
SYNOPSIS:
Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt are two passengers onboard a spaceship transporting them to a new life on another planet. The trip takes a deadly turn when their hibernation pods mysteriously wake them 90 years before they reach their destination. As Jim and Aurora try to unravel the mystery behind the malfunction, they begin to fall for each other, unable to deny their intense attraction… only to be threatened by the imminent collapse of the ship and the discovery of the truth behind why they woke up.
Passengers opens December 21.
