The Independent Spirit Awards — otherwise known as the Oscars with less expensive gift bags — were on earlier tonight. Instead of celebrating the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, the “Indies” endeavor to celebrate the creativity of independent filmmakers and award them for their efforts.
So when Paul Thomas Anderson and hisĀ Inherent Vice friends took to the stage for a special award, the famed director took the opportunity to tell everyone, “Don’t fly American Airlines. They will f*cking lose your luggage.” According to THR:
Anderson was accepting the Robert Altman Award for his work on Inherent Vice when he made the comment. The director added, “It happened to me. Seriously.”
Anderson then walked off the stage.
A spokesperson for American Airlines released a statement, saying, “We congratulate him on his award, and it’s unfortunate he had a bad experience with American. Our team will reach out to his team to see what we can do to make it right.”
Someone probably had a little “chat” with Anderson backstage, becauseĀ Foxcatcher director Bennett Miller read a statement from his fellow filmmaker while accepting his own Special Distinction Award:
“I said some bad things, I feel bad, I was trying to exhibit my independent spirit, and I thought if I wore a flannel shirt and said a bad word, you would love me more. My apologies to American Airlines. It was actually United.”
Real cute, Anderson.
