Paul Thomas Anderson talked to Rolling Stone about Inherent Vice and other things, and one of the subjects brought up was the current state of movies. While directors are dragging each other on what kind of superhero movie is important, or what counts as a “real” movie, others are wondering when the inevitable crash of popularity is going to happen with comic book movie franchises.
When presented with the question of whether or not the glut of super-powered vigilantism is ruining cinema, Anderson had a delightful response:
Ah, that’s such a f*cking crock of sh*t. I can’t remember a year in recent memory where there were less complaints about the quality of movies. And what’s wrong with superhero movies, you know? I don’t know. You’re talking to someone that enjoys watching those films. People need to get a life if they’re having that discussion [laughs]. Those movies get a bad rap.
The rest of the interview is really great, too, and they discuss Thomas Pynchon novels, plus what it was like to work with Martin Short.
