The trailer for PT Anderson’s adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s Inherent Vice looks like a cross between his Boogie Nights and the Coen Brothers’ Big Lebowski, but of course, this 1970 based detective tale will also be so much more and it will probably also be so much weirder. In an interview with The New York Times, Anderson compared Inherent Vice‘s abundance of sight gags to Airplane! and Top Secret!, ZAZ gems from another planet than the kind of films that are usually mentioned when people talk about PT Anderson’s work. And that’s part of what makes this look so appealing.
Anderson has been more buttoned up for awhile with The Master and There Will Be Blood. Unsurprisingly, the results have been startlingly good, but something that is a bit more sun-baked and off-kilter feels like a pitch perfect departure. Inherent Vice will reach theaters on December 12th. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, Benicio Del Toro, Eric Roberts and Martin Short.
