How long has it been since The Internet™ last had a moan about gender flipped remakes? Three days? That must mean it’s time for another slice of casting news that’ll cause CAPS LOCK arguments on Twitter and blood to be spilled in the streets. (Or Mountain Dew Code Red.)
It’s been revealed by Variety that Rebel Wilson is attached to star in MGM’s remake of the 1988 comedy gem Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. (The Steve Martin and Michael Caine led film was itself a remake of the 1964 offering Bedtime Story.) This marks the second ’80s comedy remake that’s eyed the services of the Aussie actress. Two years back, Wilson was reported to be a part of New Line’s planned update on Private Benjamin. We haven’t heard much about that project since and that’s sometimes the way things go with reboots.
What does the modern version of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels have in store?
The updated remake brings con artistry to the 21st century — two female scam artists, one low rent and the other high class, compete to swindle a naive tech prodigy out of his fortune.
You can’t go wrong with swindling. Morally you can, but not from an entertainment perspective. Based on the Pitch Perfect star’s willingness to go for broke to score a laugh, we’d place the likely odds on Wilson being in the “low rent” role. Mind you, we’d also be intrigued by Wilson in the “high class” spot. Who would you like to see star opposite Rebel Wilson in this remake?
