We might not have the current MCU without Robert Downey Jr. It was the success of Iron Man back in 2008 that allowed the comic book characters we know and love to blossom into the movie characters we can’t stop throwing money at every summer. But after years of playing the character, with a couple more years to come with the two-parter Infinity War and Spider-Man: Homecoming, it would be understandable for the biggest face and salary of The Avengers to finally hang up the suit. Just last month, RDJ went on record saying that we won’t be seeing him in an Iron Man 4 in the foreseeable future, and he’s trolled us in the past after saying that another Iron Man movie was in the works with Mel Gibson behind the wheel.
That’s why it came as a bit of a surprise when he teased an Iron Man 4 in a special look at Captain America: Civil War from Nightline, saying, “I feel like I could do one more.”
Does that mean another Iron Man is actually happening? Certainly not. Saying that he “feels” like he could do another is no confirmation by any means, and there is no plan for a fourth installment on the Marvel roster any time soon. But it’s certainly a different tune than saying that Civil War would be the closest thing to an Iron Man 4 starring RDJ that we would be getting.
Downey Jr. isn’t the only Avenger seemingly ready to take on their superhero persona again. Just a few days ago, Chris Evans claimed he was down for more time as Captain America if Marvel will let him.
Here’s hoping we’ll see both of them back together well after into the future. Odin knows we’ll be there, IMAX 3D tickets in hand.
